Cumulo Nimbus Library

"loaners"

...watch your head, our entire vast library building complex is in pieces in the sky.

(originated: 1 Dec 03)

(revised 3 July, 2007)

What you are about to enter is a regional library with hundreds of publications and absolutely no substance...like a cloud...like a Cumulo Nimbus Thunderhead...power, volitality, movement, effect...just no foundation, bricks, windows or roof.

It originated in the process of converting Smart Shelter Network from a disasterously paper-based environmental building network into the beauty, freedom and sanity of the digital age...a paperless entity.

It will probably never be that paper, with all its disasterous environmental problems (the number one driver for global deforestation, the number one polluter of streams, the number one landfill ingredient, the number one challenge to all recycling centers), will vanish completely from human lives.

It is, however, insanity to communicate state of the art environmental information by entombing it with toxic ink onto the tortured bodies of murdered trees.

Gone now are the days when workshops and community fair booths meant lugging, updating, setting up and taking down...not to mention storing...boxex and boxes of books, business cards, handouts, publications and graphics. It's all digital, no trees are killed and life is so much simpler.

But then there are all these books...left over from the past...certainly not trash...some which even now are not available digitally but are crucial to out progress. Solution is a central library in which books are never stored or rest. Kind of like building the Library of Congress in a thunderhead...The Cumulo Nimbus Library.

Smart Shelter purchases, reviews and disseminates all of its books. A book does no good sitting on a shelf. What's more, the shelf and the structure wich house it are scars on the planet...permanently removed from biospherical existence...for the sake of what??? storing books...to do what??? gather dust. These are books about the environment. Something's very wrong with that picture.

You have a small space on your bookshelf at home...by your bed...where books get put you're going to read...when you get around to it...which (if you're like me) may be a year or two. Everyone else that needs one of these books already has a little space to keep it. Why should Smart Shelter keep another space to house the library...with books removed from your handy access and daily reminder to read?

So all of our books are out there somewhere floating around...stored in some would-be user's home for whatever time it takes for them to be read. They'll come back when you're through with them. As soon as they do, we give them to someone else...or you find someone to give it to and let us know who and how to get ahold of them.

So...you're in the Cumulo Nimbus Library right now. If you want any of our books (or tapes, dvds, radio intervies, video home tours, etc) the list below will tell you what's there, what it is and who has it...then you contact them and go get it. Then you keep it for as long as you want...we know where it is. If another urgent need arises, they'll let you know and you can work it out.

If the Library of Congress and every other library in the world worked this way...all publications would be digitally based, immediatly accessable and transferable, editable on demand, infinatly cheaper to maintain and care for and all the library structures in the world could be converted to clothing optional community hotspring spas, all of the paper books could be composted for planting trees, grass and bushes, you wouldn't have to expose yourself to cell-phone inebriated morons to get at them and the world would save a fortune in late fees...which we could then use to dismantle the multi-national communist pinko pseudo christian, fundamentalist facist imperialistic frat rat cancer that currently threatens global existence.

Think about it. I may be right.

Enjoy.

Alternative Communities

Gaviotas-a village to reinvent the world (by alan weisman) (Cindy Smith-387-5041-silverton-checked out summer 2003) written in about 1996 by a journalist who visited this impossible-to-get-to sustainable community in the back amazon basins of Columbia. It describes technology, community structure and the restoration and survival and economic sustainability of a group of progressive engineers and social renegades that cast an entirely different catergory to what can be done to live sanely and restore a damaged world. Paulo Lugari...mastermind of the Gaviotas community...has, after 17 years of isolation in Columbia, beginning in 2002 begun touring the US and other countries in hopes of exchange of hope with lile-minded souls. To gain access to information about these tours (which if the book touches you are worth seeking out) check out the Smart Shelter Web Site Calendar of events...when we recieve notice, we post that there.

Art/Dance.

......(out of art comes the empowerment of our nature. Once that is empowered, native lifestyle follows naturally)( Art is what reminds us we can fly)

Blood Wedding-(Sheri Hickman <sherih@paonia.com> 527-4462)(dec03)- hour or so long video copy of a spanish flaminco/ballet troupe practicing and rehearsing a flaminco-based ballet based on Lorca's story of a volatile wedding...excellent contemporary flaminco dance.

Environmental Illness

....(the disease of the new millenium...medical lables such as cancer, attention deficit disorder, chronic fatigue, fibro-myalgia, multiple sclerosis, candidiasis...delineate cellular disfunction by fail to illucidate the cause. Band-aid therapies without fixing the environment which caused the malady in the first place and then sending ourselves back into the "toxic soup" is to invite escallation and disaster. In the words of one regional physician...."all disease is environmental...diagnosing the home environment and treating it along with the body is too complicated.". The following texts take us well beyond this mypia and hopefully into the light of cleaning up the environments that make us sick as we treat ourselves...since modern medicine and its educational basis steered by the chemical corporations themselves...in this regard...have most certainly and pathetically failed.

Perscription for a Health House(edition #1) (planet janet...ridgway april 04) This is a baseline treatise on multiple chemical sensitivity and the non-toxic building and lifestyle ingredients/substitutes and sources for EI's...written by an MD (Dr. Erika Elliot) who contracted the disease to the extent of nearly complete disability and had, as a professional doctor, not a clue what was wrong or what to do, Paula Baker, New Mexico State Licensed Architect who designed a home for Erika to find safe haven in, and John Banta, professional contractor specializing in the construction of this EI safe haven and others...a national building figure in the area of non-toxic ingredients. This book gives summary overview to the causes, symptoms and remediation for MCS (multiple chemical sensistivity) as well as cautionary synopsys of the regulatory and manufacturing safeguards most of use expect to protect us from poisoning through our foods, clothing, home making products and buildings....but which are increasingly exempted from scrutiny through an increasing stranglehold the multi-national corporations hold over governmental, political and regulatory entities. This book is in its second edition...Smart Shelter's copy is the first.

Prescription for a Healthy House (edition #2) (26 mar 06 out to molly jensen-moab435-259-9178) This book is the second round of the text above. Most notable in improvements is the emphasis on EMF, which is a rapidly growing concern...many new techniques.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (Nancy Carlson-325-0110- Ridgway-checked out lat 2002) a fairly good synopsis of what for a long time has been known with the EI community to be the nature of this bizaar and disabling disease brought on by "Better Living Through Cheminstry". The text is simplistic, probably in an attempt not to dissuade the newcommer by complexity...which definatly is overwelming...but at the expense of leaving the reader (expecially those of us with more advanced knowledge) a bit lacking in detail and usable solutions. This is probably one of the best starter to intermediate texts available to date on the subject. It should be give to and read/reread thoroughly by anyone having or close to those having chemical allergies. It is a decent diagnostic tool to see if what's troubling you could be this. The other recommended text is Perscriptions for a Healthy House.

"KZMU Radio Interview on Environmental Illness" 29 Dec, 2005, Moab, Utah ... a one hour public radio interview hosted by Christy Williams, Program Director KZMU interviewing Gary Duncan (Director Smart Shelter Network) and Ruth Davis (regional precident case of EMF hypersensitivity debilitation. The interview covers Smart Shelter's work with environmental illness and was in preparation for a 3 hour workshop conducted in Castle Valley the following month for 12 people interested in Environmental Illness.

Cross Currents (Dr. Robert O. Becker)- the second of two master works by the two time nobel prize nominee retired dean of the New York School of Medicine (syracuse) and orthopedic surgeon venturing into the bio-electric functions and effects of electromagnetic fields on human physiology. (Out: Ruth Davis, june 2006)

The Body Electric (Dr. Robert O. Becker) The first in the series (see Cross Currents) published in 1985 and delineating a research overview of the bio-electtrical basis of the human immune and physiology (out: Helen Oliver, Ouray, 10 July, 2006) Both this book and Cross Currents are reviewed in detail in the Smart Shelter Treatise on EMF found in the Resource Files of the website and under headings of EMF, bibliographies and environmental illness/ The EI Standard.

Greenhouses

"Radishes in the Snow" a two hour slide show presented in Hotchkiss culminating a case study innitiative reviewing 32 regional greenhouses for working and non-working ingredients, bug control, solar and massing strategies and some very innovative uses of reclaimed and salvage materials for temperature stabalization. Also includes several of the six state of the art super-hybrid cold weather greenhouses currently operating in the region...Tomten Farms, Nancy Wicks (crested butte), the Haidakahndri and Manitou strawbale, adobe hybrids in Crestone. A four hour filming of Kris Holstrom's introductory workshop on permaculture follows....six hours total.

E.I. Land Steward Project

The following are video documents prepared for several of the pilot study sites for Smart Shelter's E.I. Land Steward Project, which places those with advanced environmental illness (E.I.) on selected/ safe sites with the objective of protecting the natural communities there while both heal. Videos are usually updated annually and form a typically detailed analysis of methods and techniques used and developing with the program. Very useful either to someone interested in the program or in techniques you can use on your own property

"Circle A Organics" (Montrose)- (summer 2004) 4 months on a 5 acre riparian/cottonwood site with russian knappweed, russian olive, canadian thistle. Permaculture design for biological roadway maintenance, pond enhancement, value added drumming and weaving products from russian olive, along with chipper/shredded fluff uses and the initiation of a forest garden plan to restore mid story bushes producing berries the owners use in their preserve product lines.

Forest Garden/ Organic Intern Educational Video Series- a vudei series of several sessions begun in the summer of 2006 at Circle A Organics (Montrose) with 6 summer interns from out of the region in residence there... encompassing a travelogue of Western Colorado (Paonia, Aspen, Lake City, Ouray, Telluride...hot springs, hikes, history, scenery, camping) for their recreation...intensive management techniques for invasives (all non-chemical, of course) including russian knappweed, russian olive, canadian thistle, tammarisk...the theories and design of beginning forest gardens (including soil water migration, sun tracks, geometricks, species and value added products...as well as personal and camping techniques for comfort while staying on the land during their residencies...wick tent cooling, solar sarape and Lawrence of Olathe cooling head turbines, etc. Intention of the series is to base the preliminary work at Circle A, house a permanent collection including mapping and graphics there for future owner and intern education and then to duplicate similair copies for Smart Shelter Libraries at other key regional locations...adding video programs dealing with those specific locations to all the libraries.

Political

Systems of Transcendent Governance...in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq in the face of overwelming democratic global and national sentiment against it, reeling in the now undeniable realization that representative contemporary governmental systems are dangerously and diabolically in the hands of the moneyed elite, a theoretical and pragmatic system from ascending to a higher level of human capacity and constructing systems of governance and enacting them while the decaying, residual ones are in place...formulating the generative legacy we must now construct with our bootstraps, experience and tenacity of higher consciousness and spirit to hand to the generations to follow. This posits one pragmatic way out of the victimization and futility many of us felt in what is now (a year after and increasingly embroiling attacks reminiscent of the Vietnam era that endured for years and at the expense of one million of theirs and 60,000 of our citizens) obviously a war machine and consumer system dangerously out of control.

This video is an exerpt of the panel discussion and entire one hour workshop presented on Systems of Transcendent Governance by Gary Duncan at the Sheridan Opera House in May, 2003 as part of the Steps to Awareness Festival.

Psychology

Brain Sex-(Dar Craft-Orvis Hot Springs Massage-Ridgway- 626-2808...checked out 1999) an unlikely title for an incredible book compiled by two non-professionals with backgrounds in journalism and medicine surveying research indicating the true genetic and physiological basis for the differences in brain functions between the sexes and formation of sexual preference, which puts the issues of gay/lesbian humans into a physiological and genetic light. Fascinating insigths into the nature of our natural selves....the chemical, genetic and physiological basis for what we see manifested as human nature in a world since the 60's which explained so much as environmental.

Video Home Tours...in order to facilitate exposure, review and updating of knowledge regarding state of the are natural buildings in Western Colorado...Smart Shelter selects the best of the best, arranges a case study with the owner/builders and video documents the home and the builder's experiences...usually a couple of years after completion so that the occupant's assesment of viability, cost and comfort are included. Those who build these homes tire quickly of intrusion from curiosity seekers. The video home tour interface allows you to familiarize yourself thoroughly with relevant building forms and experiences prior to an actual visit. Often the videos make the travel, time and disruption of a visit unnecessary.

Lynda Walters Home (Checked out to Gloria/Montrose 249-1366) (second copy mar 06 checked out to adobe maria and greg) extensive interview and video coverage of 1800 sq ft two story passive solar strawbale with downstairs solar furnace/ solarium on the edge of Grand Mesa, conceived and built by Dr. Lynda Walters, MD, preliminary consultation/ training and design by Smart Shelter.

Jim and Anne Ward Home one of Western Colorado's most significant natural/solar designs to date. 2700 sq ft, integral sunroom/ solarium, hybrid passive solar strawbale/adobe including the solution to strawbale parrapet wall design without leaks. Built with Jim Ward as owner/contractor, Graham Driscol (see Green Pages on our web site) as builder, Gary Duncan/ Smart Shelter architectural designer, consultant. (Note: video is awaiting completeion...not yet available)

Catherine Eiker Home- (Grand Junction, Jan, 2002)(9 apr 04..out to bob and gloria 249/1300...249-3290 (bob) Montrose) A single middle aged woman who designed and built her own solar adobe 1060 sq ft home off grid within the city limits of Grand Junction...over a seven year period. He tears, her victories, her reasoning, her advice concerning how she did it and how she would change it if it were done again. 27 minutes.

Notes.... many, many more videos, texts and reports are currently awaiting processing and conversions to our Library. Below are unfinished notes and references waiting development. In addition, new library is developed constantly. As of Fall of 2005, our transition beyond natural building and into land stewardship and environmental illness will most likely see our library resources transfered to regional public libraries where they will be more universally accessable, insuring their availability in the future.

If you don't find what you need here, contact us to see if it is in the library. Also check this website's "Resource Files" for textual publications of media releases, course texts and published reports.
