Micro Habitats

"...the Prescription Starts with a Safe Home"

7 sept 05

Very often, at the Alpha Two level of Environmental Illness and above, remediation of the existing environment sufficient for the E.I. to recover becomes impossible. Many seek cleaner environments only to confront zoning prohibitions, the irony of electrical codes that require things get worse instead of better, the complete failure of building codes to prevent chemical damages and of course, the most devastating impact of Environmental Illness...the loss of job, workplace, friends, savings and hope.

A few inventive (and back-to-the-wall) E.I.s historically have bought trailers and headed for the hills ...with varying results. Smart Shelter has taken this approach to creating a mobile, clean, affordable "Micro Habitat" several steps further.

We notice consistently and graphically that the typical E.I. withdrawn from an environmental contamination and placed not just in a detoxified living environment, but also in a neighborhood location free of aerial spraying, auto exhaust and urban pollution invariably shows graphic improvements, often to the point within weeks or months of restored work and living functions...provided they do not reencounter the environmental anomalies and relapse.

35 years of professional building experience, six years of Smart Shelter case study research into natural buildings and sustainable technologies have allowed the escalation of "Micro Habitats" into a class all their own, supporting not only the safe living of the E.I. and their work in the new fields of Land Stewardship, but also the continuation of technology development and education quite beyond that employed even in the most sophisticated environmental building forms.

Out gassed Trailers- 20-30 year old small recreational vehicles safely out gassed from formaldehyde and free of molds are purchased at affordable prices and completely stripped, re-equiped, sanitized, insulated and reconstructed as competent, portable, permanent, safe living environments which the income impaired E.I. can own and treat with dignity and stability as their own.

Solar Design- passive solar design is incorporated into Micros proven to garner as much as 50% of their winter heating load from the sun, with the added advantage of adjusted orientations, which stationary structures do not enjoy.

Super insulation-shell systems are stripped and reconstructed with an invented technology called "Carleanite" from recycled styrofoam containers, shred from tamarisk and Russian olive and native soils. Insulation values vastly supersede those of conventional homes.

Water Catchment Roofs- are structured to collect and store approximately one third of the domestic water for a "Micro" annually.

Recaptured Energy-a step beyond renewable energy, Recaptured Energy saves and reuses the safe 12 volt dc electricity from vehicle operation which otherwise would be wasted after the first 3 minutes of operation. These salvage systems provide all energy needs for the Micro and supersede use of solar. No alternating current is ever employed.

Aerobic Waste Composting-the entirety of organic waste products from the Micro are aerobically composted, combusted and returned to the native habitat as nutrient.

Baseline Solar Lifestyle- cooking, laundry, dish washing and bathing are all supported by cost-effective and extremely simplified baseline Solar techniques piloted over the years by Smart Shelter.

Because the "Micro" has produced such stunning results in the remediation of advanced Environmental Illness cases, we consider that it is as necessary as a prescription from an M.D. treating an E.I. as any other medicine they could require.

Because Environmental Illness is a legal disability under standards such as the EPA, Social Security, Veterans Administration and public health entities, the "Micro" is distinctly differentiated from standard R.V.'s or other camping equipment. Because it is a medical necessity and required equipment for the disabled it cannot be discriminated against or prohibited from any public location, and in fact must be accommodated along with nontoxic proximities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
