Duncan Connery and the Living Glass
(Originated: 31 January, 2002)
(Revised: 14 Sept, 2005)
It was Duncan Connery who first conceived the" living glass" at the very end of the Digital Age when linear technology finally reached its limits, nearly destroying the planet as we then knew it...stretching the basically cyclic nature of our own beings (along with that of just about everything else) literally to the elastic limit a coil spring can withstand when stretched out in an attempt to form it into a straight line.
We had long since known that the crude science of the previous millennium, which identified what then was called DNA, correctly identified this substance (or rather ...illusion) as the encoding key to basic life forms. It also correctly identified the skeletal structure as helical...much like a coil spring. What it missed, of course...locked in its own overly simplistic belief structure....was that it was also alive...that is, that it, in itself, was constantly changing and very much reactive and mutable to the effects of its environment.
The idea that DNA had memory was quite beyond these pre-millennium thinkers and it would not be until well into the first duo-dectate of the new millennium that we would begin getting anywhere with this field of understanding that would lead us anywhere....certainly not until then would it have been possible to make common a material like Duncan's Living Glass.
Glass, of course, is the material of peace and harmony. It makes possible the acceptance, conversion and storage of the energy we need for comfort and sustained directive action, but at the same time leaves us free to have perception without constraint.
Metal is the material of war and we make it no more. The only real long term effects of man's capacity to make metal was the manufacture of destruction and war...the swords, the guns, the bombs, the aircraft, the tanks....the machinery which finally destroyed the old order....thankfully.
I first brought this insight regarding the distinctions inherent in the materials of manufacture as a basal first indicator of malevolence to the Council of Maura at the midpoint of the first duodectate of this new millennium.
I could see at once that it struck an elucidating chord in Connery. His eyes lit barely half way through the first paragraph of my monologue, as though he, himself had been struggling with the ghosts of this dilema...like the way we battle with the demons of premonition before the fears manifest themselves into the brightness of day.
There is, of course, phenomenal deterministic content installed into any material of manufacture based on the imposed juxtaposition of the respective energies inherent in the original materials used in the process.
Prior millennium industrialists (let alone their scientists) had no regard or knowledge of such energy or phenomenon. Consequently, they themselves fell immediate victim to the monstrosity they created as if it were milk capable of being squeezed interminably and at unrestricted volume from the breast of the planet.
Obviously, no sooner did a new metal come into existence...refined copper, iron, alloy steel, aluminum, titanium and finally the platinum alloy...until it attracted the reptilian intergressors, who immediately usurped its manufacture and hammered into the vehicles of domination, destruction and war....either that, or it simply took over the psyches of those who invented, manufactured and used it...they all developed reptilian over tones and eventually self destructed (along with their victims).
As we see it now, now that we understand that the subtle energetics of all materials and life form, despite their invisibility to earlier species of the homo-sapien line, these subtle energy forces are overwhelmingly powerful not only in determining the nature of their eventual use, but also in the selection of the entities they attract to their new existences in combinations with the other elements of their making.
The combination of brutally extracted elemental metal crystal structures disemboweled from the planet's skin and petroleum derived heat...which is basically the latent residue of reptilian decay...produces a monstrosity...a remarkably strong (at least by ancient standards) material with the attractive energy and power of a dreadfully demonic entity...the primal reptilian.
It was no accident that these metals turned the men who made them into demons and the cultures into which they infused them into the charred rubble and twisted fingers of radioactive steel we now gaze out across in the choked and ruined valleys of bygone urban rubble...from here in the citadels of a different era.
Duncan Connery, understood at once, long before I could finish the perspective I delivered to the Council that day, that we must change the energy of the materials we make or die, along with the degenerative off-lines of the species already well on their ways out of existence.
In the following months he perfected the solar crucible and from that day forward the reaches of humanity following the Council of Maura have never manufactured a material with energy from any other source.
As Duncan put it "the supreme being buried the reptilian age for a reason...no one in their right mind digs up the coal, gas and oil they became and turns it into their homes...its like moving your bed into the mouth of a teradactyl...even if you can stand the smell, the chances you'll survive past lunch are zip."
(I've never been able to reconcile Duncan's flippant vocabulary with his brilliant scientific mind...much less his unbelievably deadly capabilities as a warrior)
Anyway...obviously, this was the beginning of the explanation for the course of action all of us have long since taken, which is to live only in shelter constructed of other living things or of the stiller life forms (soil, stone, etc) in their unmutilated original states....basically we've learned to respect the entities which give us shelter if we ever hope they will respect us...afterall, we spend our lives in their grip.
It was easy enough to find the ways of making shelter out of the soil, stone and living fiber universes without disturbing their life cycles and meaning...living fibers are harvested after their life forces are finished with the forms. Consequently we have all the wood, grasses, straw, peat, etc we need...building most of our structure from the earth based media anyway...leaving the living forms available in abundance...at least in the stretches of the planet we've been able to restore.
But the energy needs and the release of structural constraints on our vision and spirits left us with the necessary dilemma of glass. If we could still have this one manufactured material, so much more would still be possible. Without it we lived out of touch with the sun and the moon and the heavens and without the energy already abundant and flowing through the planet...but excluded by the other materials with which we surrounded our living environments.
Duncan's guess was intuitive, but profoundly correct. There was very little we could expect in terms of malevolent energy in silica...the basic molecule of stone, sand and glass as long as we didn't torture it. That is precisely what previous generations had done...with petroleum fuel-based manufacture. Combine a tortured reptile with stone and you get a stone-hard reptile.
The skyscrapers now in shambles we gaze out upon from the citadels, the wrecked automobiles, the piles of materials waste slowly dissolving themselves back into the planet in the endless seas of the urban shambles of the last millennium and the first part of the new one are testimonial enough to what happens when you stack 118 stories of petroleum fused glass up into the air as edifices to greed and domination....and then elect reptiles to offices entrusted to oversee them.
The first glass Duncan made in his crude solar crucible bore characteristics...as primitive as it was...immediatly discernible to the rest of the Council.
He made 6 panels the size of Gellindril's reach...vertically and horizontally. They still stand.... though the cottage has long since been abandoned and relegated to status as a quaint historic structure...there in the earliest sections of the Lamborn Citadel.
He built a huge bay window arch spanning the entire south of the home with breathtaking views of the mountains and sky.
At night, the stars develop a dazzling, dancing simmering limmerance when seen through the glass. The late and early low angle lights of day break into subtle defractive rainbows spilling across the floor in a sort of solar clock. Gellindrill still says she had not lived in that cottage a week...back then in that previous incarnation...before she gave up any other devices for measuring time. "It was as though the energy of the glass could speak to me about the positions and moods of the sun...obviously it could...that's where it came from." she'd exclaim, with that childlike lilt she gets when her spirit dances in a delightful solution to comfort needs.
The solar glass opened a yawning pit of experiment and potential which proceeded to inhale the rest of that existence for Duncan's spirit. The digital age was then in full swing and he quickly realized that there were ingredients which came out of the silicon age...mostly with camera and computer technology that could make the characteristics of the glass not only controllable, but also an energy source
The crude solar collectors of the past millennium were simply imbedded in the glass panels while they were still molten in the solar crucible and when they cured, the windows themselves became the silicon crystal medium which converted solar energy into electricity.
He also started imbedding digitally controllable molecular ingredients which would make the glass foggy or bright, change its color or make it more insulating or less.
This was when he (half jokingly) started to refer to the panels which could now be wired to an electrical energy system or varied in color and fog to accept or shade from the sun or change the color tint of the view (like sun glasses) as "living glass".
Doubtless he had no idea how close he was to the truth.
I still have a room in my home made with what was then what Duncan himself saw as the "zenith" of his endeavor. There is a small computer panel with touch switches, wired to solar sensors and by simply telling the digital device what conditions I want to experience in the room, it will control all the functions of the glass to produce those. In 118 years in this house, it has never failed (once Duncan finally got the damned thing tuned right) to produce everything that room needs...including the color of the stars and snow viewed through those windows.
But "living glass" was a misnomer for what we now see as a quirky little side step in technology understandable given the fact that digital technology and linear thinking about the nature of energy and life were about to become bug guts on a fast moving windshield.
That happened at the beginning of the second duodectate, once we grasped the real symbology of DNA and realized we were looking at the syllabus of not only all life, but all time and were seeing it on the scale... on the threshold... at which all experience in what we then called the real world disappears into the fabric of space and becomes invisable...once we finally grasped what DNA was...we were given unbounded capacity to discover the ways it could be used without damage, denigration, modification or destruction for our common good...and indeed, once used in that manner, the DNA itself would develop vibratory response indicating its joy at being part of our comfort and harmony...it would respond to us as another benevolent living life form.
The opening of this knowledge of the biology of life infused Duncan's glass with a literally living substance, which he very quickly discovered could communicate with our species.
It's unbelievable how he discovered how to place the right living substances into molten silica in a solar crucible without disturbing it one bit. I don't really understand this process enough to do much more than embarrass myself by trying to explain it, so we'll leave it to him to do...if he ever gets a mind to. Suffice it to say that not only has he done it, but all civilization as we now know it in times stretching deep into the new millennium lives with this material as though it had always been with us.
Besides the room of my home I described with the old digital glass, which I keep around mostly for the kids to come play with, the rest of my home, for many many years now has been glazed with "Living glass". We are in constant contact with each other, even when I'm not at home. It takes a while for the glass and a new owner to understand and find each other, but once that line of intuitive communication are established, it would appear...and it is my experience, now several incarnations removed from the original time of installation...that the relationship is perpetual and unaffected by entering or exiting any particular existence...of which I've had plenty.
It literally reads my mind. We speak to each other in soft thoughts. If it senses I'm too warm in mid day it prepares to add shading to the window's opacity, but won't do it unless I ask. It can communicate with me at great distance, especially if something is wrong. It delivers a deep, strong intuitive message and I sense clearly the situation in my home, even half way around the planet. Often we have corrected problems like these without my even moving...just by visualization and telepathic instruction.
Once a large bird flew into one of the panels. I was far at sea at the time. To this day I can recall that feeling as the glass cracked and shattered...a strong crying and horrible feeling of loss and grief, as if someone had died. I knew in an instant what was wrong, though it was impossible to do much.
Duncan's quirky arrays of old batteries he used to store the early glass's electricity are now gone...the energy itself is stored in the glass, available for use anytime.
If a woman I'm with gets a little "steamy" and we need privacy, I can turn the glass (or rather the glass can turn itself) into a light-proof (and insulating) curtain with a simple nonverbal request.
I might also note that through the years of living with this "bio-silicon" living entity...which might illicit concerns about trust...the glass has never once...to my knowledge...divulged a whisper of what happens with "steamy women in my home. Thought I might just throw that in as a non-concern for those of you who might think about these things and are living in a time when this stuff wasn't ordinary.
Well, I've got to be going now. The Council had decided I should send you back this kind of information, not to divulge the secrets of this technology(because we dare not risk that), but to encourage you to speed your attempts to develop it...because, obviously, you will.
It is our hope that this bit of elucidation might aid you in shortening the time frame it has taken humanity to revise its consumptive energy and resource habits, science and base. This is critically important to the future ahead of you and the one in which we live, because the source of all of mankind's dilemmas, even to the extent of the horror perpetrated by its self-inflicted destruction, stem from the ways it consumes the planets resources and reassembles them in attempt to find satisfaction of comforts and needs.
All of the political activism, regulation, proactive initiatives and reforms you might undertake in your life today and tomorrow will not do for your future what changing the patterns of your cultures consumption will...and this obviously must happen on a one-person-at-a-time basis...hopefully beginning with whatever the current day of your life turns out to be when you receive this.
These are your choices and the initiative we have taken by transiting time to empower you are limited to the encouragement and perspective in guidance you might find by our showing you what your future holds. If you change your priorities and actions today based on these perspectives it will change the entirety of all of our futures...because, as we hope you now know...we are you, speaking backwards in time from a point deep in your future...voices in spirit flying across the vast reaches of the New Millennium.
